    Description

1863 .00 North Carolina Note – PMG Choice Uncirculated 63
Offered for your consideration is a .00 Civil War era note issued by the state of North Carolina, cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as CR. 118. The central vignette features a portrait of Governor Zebulon B. Vance, presented in an oval frame, flanked by a panoply of flags and military material. The financial obligation, printed above and below the portrait, states that
“THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA Will Pay FIFTY DOLLARS to Bearer. Redeemable at the TREASURY on or before the FIRST DAY OF JANUARY, 1866”
. This is followed by the signatures of two treasury officials who sign
    “for Compt.”
    (for Comptroller) and
    “for Treas.”
(for Treasurer). A red overprint reading
    “FIFTY”
covers part of the obligation. The location,
    “RALIEGH”
    , and the date,
    “1
    st
    JANUARY 1863”
, can be seen to the left and right of the portrait, respectively, with the statement that the note was “
RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL PUBLIC DUES
    ” and was
    “ISSUED UNDER ACT RATIFIED 20
    th
    DECEMBER 1862”
at the top. A second vignette, depicting a standing female figure representing Justice, can be seen at the left, with the denomination presented in numerical format above and below. The right end of the note is dominated by a decorative box, with the denomination, expressed as
    “FIFTY”
within. Also printed in this box is an additional financial statement which indicates that the note was
“FUNDABLE IN SIX PER CENT COUPON BONDS OF THE STATE AFTER 1
    st
    JANUARY 1866”
. In common with many notes of the era, the back of this piece is blank. It was
“Engd. & Lithod. by J. T. Paterson & Co Augusta, Ga.”
as evidenced by their imprint at the lower left. This variety (CR. 118), was printed on paper bearing a “J. WHATMAN 1861” watermark, indicating that it was supplied by J. Whatman, though only the horizontal lines and part of an unidentified design indicative of this paper are visible on this example. While not among the original states to secede and form the Confederacy, by the close of the war, North Carolina would contribute more soldiers to the cause and be one of the principal suppliers of the effort. Its currency is among the most heavily collected of all of the state issues, with numerous varieties and types in the series. This piece would make a great addition to any existing collection, or a super beginning to a new set. Worthy of a strong bid.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
    “Choice Uncirculated 63”
, with no additional notations present. This particular specimen exhibits irregular margins, with the top and left edges affecting the inner frame-lines. Minor toning is present across the entire surface, imparting to the paper an off-white to light beige hue. This toning is slightly darker at the edges, somewhat more pronounced on the blank back. The contrast is sharp and bold, though the red protectorate is a little light (especially at the left end). Though not noted on the holder, ink corrosion can be seen at the serial number and signatures. A nice, representative example of this very popular note.
A .95 charge will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance.
A .00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location.
